NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2024 Next Meeting Wednesday December 4th at 7.45pm in the Sport Pavilion
Talk by Sandy Primrose
This meeting will be our Christmas social - we will be serving wine as well as tea and coffee, also mince pies and Christmas nibbles, so do come if you can. Sandy Primrose is back again to entertain us with another of his informative talks. This time he is talking about “Frankincense Myrrh and the Incense Trail”. We all know these substances from as far back as our Nativity plays at school, so we know they have been around for a long time but what they are, where they come from and what they were and are used for is a bit of a mystery much of the time. So expect to have these lacunas filled in.
Last Month: Carolyn Foster gave us a talk titled “The Winter Garden”. She had lots of advice, good illustrations and named plants that look good in winter and how mix for variety. GARDEN VISITS: Jo is planning to return to St Timothee on April 3, 2025 and Wellford Park near Newbury to see snowdrops, and she is very happy to organize the trips so members can go too. Here are details of the two visits.
- NGS garden St Timothee near Maidenhead. Talk and Walk that many of us have enjoyed in the past, homemade cakes, tea and coffee with plenty of time to wander the garden at your leisure after the talk. The talk last c. 45-60 minutes and are held in the indoor, (heated and seats!) 'Games Room'. There is a new talk for 2025 - 'A Garden for all Seasons' - which shows Sarah's approach to designing borders which work right across the year. The date is Thursday 3rd April (probably 11.00 am). We expect tickets to go on sale in January/February and could sell out fast….so early booking suggested. https://findagarden.ngs.org.uk/garden/33095/st-timothee Contact Jo if interested [email protected]. We will try and arrange/coordinate transport if required.
Snow drops at Welford Park - "one of the best places in the UK to see snowdrops" https://www.welfordpark.co.uk/event/snowdrops-at-welford-park/ If anyone is interested in a visit during the snowdrop "season" Jo will coordinate/organise one. Wednesday & Thursday are discount days!! £11 (£10 seniors). They open every week through February and early March. The proposal would be to take interested names, so you can sign up during our meeting, and arrange the actual date nearer the time…when we see what the weather is doing!
PLANT TABLE: There will be a no Plant Table this month. NEXT MEETINGS: There will be no meeting in January.
Our February meeting will be on Wednesday 5th February - the speaker will be Timothy Walker talking about “Euphorbias”. He is passionate about Euphorbias and is very knowledgeable.
The committee would like to wish all our members a peaceful Christmas and a Happy Gardening New Year.
