NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2019
Next Meeting
Wednesday 6th February at 7.45pm in Watlington Town Hall
Speaker: Timothy Walker
You will remember that Timothy Walker, who is has retired as the Head of the Oxford Botanic Gardens has given us several talks in the past and they have all been excellent. This month his talk is titled ‘In the not so Bleak Midwinter’. This is a very apt subject for this month and hopefully will inspire us to more enthusiasm for the time of year.
Last Two Months
We had a rest in January and in December our Christmas Quiz went really well, lots of questions and really curious seeds, and some deep knowledge was shown by our members.
VISITS. We are planning three trips this summer for you. One we have finalized and details are below. One of the other trips we hope to organize planning is to Sandy Primrose’s Garden in High Wycombe. He gave us a brilliant talk in November about making your garden low maintenance, so seeing how he has put this into practice in his own garden will be very useful for us.
Malverleys Gardens, nr. Newbury, RG20 0AA. This is a 10 acre garden developed in the last 7 years with magnificent mixed borders, contrasting yew hedge rooms enclosing flame borders, cool garden, a pond garden and a stumpery. There is a vegetable garden meadow and parkland. Tis will be a shared car trip as it’s about 50 minutes’ drive away. It was featured in Gardeners’ World a couple of years ago and we have been trying to secure a booking ever since.
The date we have is Thursday 20th June in the afternoon, the entrance if £10.00 which includes tea and cake. There is a minimum of 40 places. The Booking From is below
Chiltern Alpine Group has organised a trip to Ashwood nurseries on Tuesday 19th February for a tour of, and talk on, the Ashwood Hellebores. There are a few spaces still available if anyone is interested. The coach will leave Great Kingshill at 8.00 am on 19 February and with a short comfort stop on the way would expect to arrive at Ashwood at about 10.30 - 10.45.
There will also be a tour of John Massey's garden. www.ashwoodnurseries.com
We will hopefully divide into two groups to do both tours and enable time for lunch and afternoon tea (in the very good cafe/ restaurant they have there) and a look round the Nursery. We would expect to leave Ashwoods at or just before 5.00 pm. Cost £28.00 pp
If anyone is interested in joining this trip please contact Jo Dudley who can arrange transport to Great Kingshill. jodudley@btinternet.com
